What is a public water system?
The U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act and Derivative legislation define a public water system as an entity that provides water for human consumption through pipes or other constructed conveyances to at least 15 service connections or serves an average of at least 25 people for at least 60 days a year.
Are their grants available for system repairs/upgrades?
NH has a State Drinking Water Revolving Loan Fund. Small public water systems may apply and are considered based on a point system. If requirements are met a small public water system may receive a percentage of the loan as a grant.
Does the state inspect public water systems?
Yes, NH Department of Environmental Services conducts a sanitary survey every 5 years.
Where do I find rules and regulations on public water systems?
NH Department of Environmental Services One Stop data and information website.
What is a boil-water order?
A boil-water advisory or boil-water order is a public health advisory or directive given by a government or health authorities to consumers when a community’s drinking water is, or may be, contaminated by pathogens.
Do I need a certification to run my public water system?
The Water Works Operator Certification Program requires all community and non-community/non-transient public water systems in New Hampshire to be under the responsible charge of a primary certified drinking water system operator. The primary operator is responsible for all operational aspects and for overseeing system maintenance. Other water system personnel making decisions directly affecting water quality or quantity must also be certified. A public water system represents a significant lifelong investment for any community, demanding that operators be fully trained and certified.
